No Escape Trailer Analysis

No escape trailer analysis

I am going to list all of the media terminology that I noticed in the trailer regarding the Sound, Camera, Editing and Mise en scene that is used throughout the trailer.

Sound
  • There is a sound motif of a piano at the start of the trailer
  • Then dialogue between the characters
  • Asynchronous sound of little girl saying 'what if we don't like it here'.
  • Diegetic sound of glasses clinking and chimes clicking together
  • A sound effect of a loud high pitched trumpet sound is used to add tension to make the audience aware that something is going to happen to the character on screen.
  • More diegetic sounds of an army of people hitting their weapons against their shields and then windows smashing and shouting a noise.
  • Non diegetic sounds of gun shots
  • The sound motif changes to a quicker pace to represent the change in atmosphere
  • A percussive sound motif begins to add intensity
  • The sound motif changes again into a calmer instrumental of pianos making the scenes atmosphere calm again
  • Diegetic sound of a helicopter, gunshots and smashing sounds begin.
  • Non digetic sound of a bomb exploding and fire crackling
  • The sound motif turns to a heart beat that gets faster as the scene goes on, which builds intensity and represents how the character is feeling
Camera
  • The trailer starts with a close up of the main actor in the film
  • Then mid shots of the other three main characters
  • Close up shot of little girl looking out of window
  • Establishing shot of many houses to show the area (an Asian community)
  • Long shot of the family walking into the hotel
  • Two shot of little girls
  • Long shot of main character walking outdoors
  • The mid shot of him
  • Then close up to show his facial expression change
  • Extreme wide shot of the army walking down the street
  • High angle shot of people fighting
  • Track of man on floor
  • Low angle shot of little girl pushing up out of a pool of water
  • Two shot of parents
  • Point of view shot from a door looking through the peek hole
  • Handheld camera whilst the family is running to make the audience feel apart of the action
  • High angle shot of family
  • Close up of mother and daughter smiling
  • Wide shot of people on roof and helicopter
  • Close up of  gun
  • Close up of characters faces to show their emotions change
  • Birds eye view of family trying to hide
  • Point of view shot looking down on top of a building
  • Ariel shot of girl being thrown off a building

Editing
  • Various straight cuts of family
  • The pace of the cross cuts increase as the trailer goes on to add intensity
  • Slow motion of war (fighting) weapons, man turning around, man falling, people walking on the roof, main character throwing his child of the roof,
  • Three fades of the main character walking to a shop this tells the audience that something is going to happen and adds a sense of nervousnesses into the scene
  • Zoom cut into a weapon
  • Fade to black of man on the floor (representing death?)
  • Special effects of gun shots and explosions throughout the end of the scene

Mise en scene
  • Characters: Owen Wilson and Pierce Brosan
  • A white american family wearing casual clothes
  • Low key lighting whilst the characters are moving into their house to show that it is night time
  • High key lighting in the army scene to show that it is in the day time
  • Props are used such as guns, weapons, a hat, a blue mask, shields, a phone and a glasses of beer
  • The characters run and through there body language the audience knows that the y are terrified because there facial expression show that they are screaming and crying hysterically.
  • The terrorist are wearing balaclavas,  masks, have blood coloured t shirts on and they are Asian
  • The location in in south east Asia
  • Framing: mostly main characters of many different characters in the centre of the screen throughout
These are the notes that I took down on a mind map whilst watching the trailer various times, in order to make sure that I had analysed key features and so I didnt miss anything out as trailers are very fast paced:
