Bruce Almighty Trailer Analysis

Bruce Almighty trailer analysis

I am going to list all of the media terminology that I noticed in the trailer regarding the Sound, Camera, Editing and Mise en scene that is used throughout the trailer.

Sound
  • Asynchronous sound of snoring and an alarm clock ringing whilst the universal sign is being show
  • Dialogue of main characters having a conversation
  • Sound motif (calm slow singing)
  • A narrative voice over starts by asking the audience rhetorical questions such as, 'Have you ever felt unappreciated?' and 'have you ever thought life was unfair?' These questions show that this is how the main character who is being shown feels. Showing that he feels unappreciated and that he thinks life is unfair. A narrative voice over is used throughout the trailer.
  • Sound bridge: the piece of audio carries on playing over from one clip to the next to enhance continuity.
  • Non diegetic sound of thunder
  • Music slows and changes (no singing and goes into an instrumental piano)
  • A sound effect of high notes plays and fits in perfectly with the movement of an object sliding into the characters hands, this adds a magical feeling to the audience and enhances the fact that the main character has gained powers.
  • The sound track changes into the song 'I've got the power', which related well to the films plot and adds humour
  • Non diegetic sound of water gushing out of a sprayer and a woman's skirt fly s up
  • Then there is another song change
  • Non diegetic sound of car zooming, windy weather and a dog barking that have been added in for effect
  • Many dialogues throughout
Camera
  • Shows the universal logo
  • Then a high angle two shot introducing the two characters lying in bed
  • Then the spyglass entertainment logo appears
  • Goes into a wide shot of one character still lay in bed
  • Over the shoulder shot of actor looking into the mirror
  • Wide shot of his dog urinating
  • Close up of main character
  • Another over the shoulder shot of a camera man filming the main character
  • Mid closeup of main character
  • Very wide shot of him in a bakers shop
  • Two shot of two presenters
  • Various mid shots throughout
  • Long shot of a table
  • Establishing shot of the character walking on water
  • Over the shoulder shot
  • Low angle shot of the couple hugging in the moonlight
  • two shot of the couple
  • Wide shot of character walking through his office
  • Two shot of presenters again
  • Mid shot of one presenter
  • Point of view shot of the moon enlarging
  • Close up shot of a bowl of soup
Editing
  • Shows the universal logo
  • Then the spyglass entertainment logo appears
  • Zoom out of main character in bed to show his full body
  • Various cuts to different parts of scenes throughout
  • Zoom in as all of the gangsters run up to the main character to give the audience the feel of him being closed in by them, it is also handheld camera being used to make the audience feel as if they are part of this action
  • Short pan of him wetting his foot in a puddle
  • Special effect of thunder and lightning
  • Then a is a fast forward of the camera moving vastly around the actor, then it zooms into him
  • Special effects are used to make the character appear to have seven fingers
  • A tilt of a motorway scene
  • The location of where the characters are is edited to look like they are standing on the top of high mountain with snow falling down.
  • Special effects, a tin moving towards his hand, water coming out of pipes, making the moon zoom in as he uses a balcony to lean off, cars and soup move aside,  a car zooming and a skirt lifting upwards.
  • A pan is used as he glides through the office
  • Text is inserted at the end showing the films title and credits
Mise en scene
  • Starts off in a bed the characters are wearing pyjamas
  • The main characters body language shows that he doesn't want to get up out of bed as he does an aggressive dance
  • He then wears a shirt as he is filming showing he is of middle class
  • The two presenters are smartly dressed showing they are of a higher class and have more dominance
  • The first few shots are located in an average sized house in America
  • The location then changes to a bakers store
  • Then it shows new characters in an office wearing suit representing that they are middle class
  • Then moves onto show new characters wearing baggy clothes to give the affect that they are suppose to be gangsters
  • Props are used throughout the trailer such as: A hair net. ketchup bottle, soup in a bowl, a glass of water.
  • Morgan Freeman who is playing the role of God is wearing all white to show this.
  • The main character wears casual clothes
  • The location changes: it starts in a house, then on the street, in a bakers shop, on a film set, in an office, a carpark, near the sea, in a fully white room with hardly any furniture,  in a cafe, a shopping centre, a kitchen, on water in the middle of the ocean, a balcony, and in snowy are on top of a mountain.
  • A dog stands up to urinate in the toilet like a man, this adds humour
  • High key lighting is mostly used throughout apart from the scene were the main character is shouting at nighttime by the sea.
  • As for framing the character is mostly in the centre of most of the shots or more towards the left hand side of the screen.
  • the character uses facial expressions and body language to portray his emotions for example, when he has seven fingers his face looks disgusted and scared and when he notices that he has powers he open his mouth wide to show that he is shocked.

These are the notes that I took down on a mind map whilst watching the trailer repeatedly:
