Sound Research

As my role is to control the sound in the trailer I have researched the specific needs that my role entails.

Sound Effect definition: A sound other than music or speech that is made artificially for use in a film, play or other broadcast production.

Because of my role I think that it is important for me to understand the concept of sound and how it can be used to portray certain moods. I have the responsibility within the group of controlling all concepts of sound within the trailer. I therefor I have to include a soundtrack within the trailer that will relate with the romantic comedy genre and give the trailer an atmosphere using sound. I have looked at other romantic comedy trailers including, The Break Up, Princess Diaries and Two Weeks Notice, all of which use soundtracks where the music changes depending on the scenes.
By carrying out this research I have developed a clear understanding of what I need to do in order to do an effective job in my role, as the key feature that I have found when it comes to the trailers soundtrack is that I need to change the music for the different scenes to change the mood/atmosphere. For example, the more romantic clips could have a jazzy but slow piano number in the background and then for the more energetic scenes I could have a guitar and drums playing to make the audience feel more intense and involved with the narrative. As sound has a big influence on the trailers mood it is essential that I create the appropriate soundtrack for our trailer so I have analysed the similarities of sound used in most romantic comedy trailers.

These three romantic comedy trailers all include the following features regarding sound:

  • A voice over.
  • A soundtrack that changes as the scenes go on creating a flow/atmosphere to the trailer and making the audience feel involved with the scenes moods.
  • Humorous dialogue between the main characters.
  • Use a mixture of classical songs and songs with dialogue which is played quietly in the back ground so you can still hear the characters dialogue.
